Phyllis Marie Petrus, 88 of Hutto, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
Phyllis Marie Petrus was born January 11, 1938, in Flint, Michigan. She was the second eldest of five children born to Esther C. Proffer & Hiram Proffer. She and her siblings were raised in Flint, Michigan where she graduated from Dye High School. It was there that she met and later married Thomas Michael Petrus of Slatington, Pennsylvania. They had four children and recently celebrated 68 years of marriage.
Phyllis pursued sales in a multitude of areas throughout her life. She possessed a wealth of knowledge & experience in antiques including refinishing and refurbishing relics. She & Thomas owned and operated antique stores in numerous places throughout the years including Northeast Austin (Windsor Village), The Marketplace (above the Old Coupland Inn), and later in Taylor on Porter Street & East Third. Phyllis was also an accomplished Realtor throughout Travis, Williamson and surrounding counties. Prior to her pursuit of real estate, she was an active member of the community of Coupland. She also held the position of Vice President of KJZT, a Catholic Fraternal organization for several years. She also was active in the Williamson County Historical Society.
In her elder years, she mastered EBay sales where she marketed and shipped antiques across the US and abroad. She boasted a “5 Star – Super Seller” rating in communications and timely delivery. Phyllis possessed an entrepreneurial spirit throughout her life. She believed there was no limit to what one could achieve. “If it is meant to be, it is up to ME” was one of her favorite sayings. “Can’t, never do anything” was another favorite saying she preached to her children & grandchildren. She held a special place in her heart for family, always hosting special gatherings and making time to attend sporting events for her numerous grandchildren.
Phyllis is proceeded in death by her parents, a brother – Larry Proffer as well as an older sister – JoAnne Spellings. She is survived by two siblings: Janet Nelson (Kenneth) of Holly, Michigan and Kenneth Proffer (Dana) of Paris, Arkansas.
Phyllis was most proud of her family; Kimberly Buttler, Kevin Petrus, Kara Pinnelli (Christopher) and Katrina Shipley (John). The family is blessed to welcome ten grandchildren: Brittany Uribe, Dustin Buttler, Christopher Petrus (Jessi), Michael Petrus (Rodney), John Petrus, Travis Fielder (Lauren), Shane Fielder, Trey Pinnelli, Tanner Thrift (Brittany) & Taitem Moseley (Conner). Additionally, she had six great grandchildren: Gabriel Zaffiro, Isabella Zaffiro, Bree Uribe, River Petrus, Franklin Fielder & Kyler Moseley. She is honored to have unique relationships with her niece – Debra Spellings (Kyle Humphries) and nephew – Tracy Spellings(Sonya).
A memorial service will be held January 25, 2026, at 1 pm at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Peterson Gardens C/O: “Keep Hutto Beautiful” at PO Box 591, Hutto, Texas or the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ Cemetery Maintenance Fund in Coupland, Texas.
