Lillian Marie Spurgeon

May 26, 1948 — December 14, 2025

Lillian Spurgeon, 77, passed away peacefully on Dec.14, 2025 at her home in Taylor.

Lillian was born on May 26, 1948, in Smithville on a stormy night she always swore she could remember. Her parents were Cyril and Kathryn Pesl. She attended schools in Smithville, graduating in 1966 and marrying her high school sweetheart, Carl Lloyd Spurgeon. Their love was one for the ages. They were inseparable from the day they met and were happily married for 59 years, raising their daughter, Melanie, in Taylor.

Lillian was first and foremost a dedicated homemaker, creating a welcoming and loving environment for her family. In the 1980s, she extended this warmth by opening a successful daycare business in her home, helping to raise dozens of children until the arrival of her own grandchildren. Her home was always filled with love, laughter, and toys; a long series of loyal cats and beagles were just as much a part of the family.

A woman of simple joys, Lillian loved settling in with a good novel, listening to country music, and quietly observing the vibrant cardinals and hummingbirds that visited her backyard. She was an enthusiastic collector, and her home was filled with treasures, each piece with its own story. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her nurturing spirit and the warmth and laughter she infused into the very fabric of her home.

Lillian is survived by her husband of 59 years, Carl Spurgeon of Taylor, her daughter Melanie Catuogno and husband Philip of Pflugerville, and grandchildren Zack, Milo, and Xander Catuogno of Pflugerville; her brothers Danny Pesl and wife Kathy of Smithville and Cyril Pesl Jr. and wife Shirley of Rosanky; her sisters Mary Ann Srubar and Kathy Karisch of Smithville; sister-in-law Minnie Pesl of Rockdale; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cyril and Kathryn Pesl; her brothers William Joseph, Benjamin, and Alois Pesl; and her brothers-in-law Gus Srubar and Ernest Karisch.
