Or beloved Ernesto Hector Chavana, known to all as Ernest, passed away on July 1, 2025, in Houston, TX, after a lengthy illness. He was 71 years old.
Born in Taylor, TX on April 27, 1954, to Angelita and Jesus Chavana, Ernest was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was known for his warm heart, big laugh, and an unmistakable presence that brought joy to everyone he met.
A lifelong lover of music, Ernest had a gift for rhythm and a deep passion for performing. In his younger years, he played in the Tejano band The Illusions and proudly toured across the United States with the popular 1970s Tejano group Neto Perez and the Originals. His talent on the drums and love for singing were matched only by the stories he loved to tell from those days—and the laughter he shared while telling them.
Ernest was the kind of man who never met a stranger. His sense of humor, big heart, and infectious energy will live on in the memories of all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Angelita Chavana; his brothers Jesse Chavana (and wife Linda), John Raymond Chavana (and wife Rosie); his sister Minerva Gonzales; and his brother-in-law Ernest Ariola Sr.
He is survived by his children: Adrian Chavana (wife Ashlee), Ernesto “Ernie” Chavana (wife Jennifer), and Adrianna Chavana. He was a proud grandfather to Jameson and Marlowe Chavana. Ernest also leaves behind the mother of his children and dear friend, Brenda Chavana and extended family the Ramirez family of Wharton, Texas.
He is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Antonio Chavana (Gloria), Manuel Chavana (Maria), Frank Chavana (Adella), Delia Ariola, Dolores Hernandez (Arthur), and Anna Marie Gonzalez (Homero). He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, who will always remember him as the fun-loving uncle with a beat in his heart and a song on his lips.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Taylor, TX. Interment will follow at Taylor City Cemetery.
